چکیده

In August 1989, epidemiologists from the New York State Department of Health (NYSDH) investigated five reports of generalized seizures temporally associated with topical use of N,Ndiethyl-m-toluamide (DEET). Three of the case-patients, one from New York and two from Connecticut, were reported by a pediatric neurologist who practices in both states. One case was reported initially to an entomologist in New York, and one was reported directly to the NYSDH. The cases occurred in June through August 1989.

Comparative efficacy of insect repellents against mosquito bites.

BACKGROUND The worldwide threat of arthropod-transmitted diseases, with their associated morbidity and mortality, underscores the need for effective insect repellents. Multiple chemical, botanical, and "alternative" repellent products are marketed to consumers. We sought to determine which products available in the United States provide reliable and prolonged complete protection from mosquito b...

Preparation and Skin Permeation Study of N, N- Diethyl- meta-Toluamide Semi Solid Formulations

N,N-Diethyl meta Toluamide (DEET) is an insect repellent agent that contrary to its benefits,if is used in formulations with high skin permeation, will produce side effects of differentseverity. This study attempted to achieve a semi-solid DEET containing formulation withgood appearance, sufficient spreadity, suitable viscosity for tube and jar filling, compatible pHwith skin, reasonable stabil...

The insect repellent N,N-diethyl-m-toluamide (DEET) induces angiogenesis via allosteric modulation of the M3 muscarinic receptor in endothelial cells

The insect repellent N,N-diethyl-m-toluamide (DEET) has been reported to inhibit AChE (acetylcholinesterase) and to possess potential carcinogenic properties with excessive vascularization. In the present paper, we demonstrate that DEET specifically stimulates endothelial cells that promote angiogenesis which increases tumor growth. DEET activates cellular processes that lead to angiogenesis in...

Allergic contact dermatitis due to an insect repellent: double sensitization to picaridin and methyl glucose dioleate.

Sir, Picaridin, a piperidine derivate, is a promising insect repellent that has been available to the consumer since 1998 (1). Picaridin protects against arthropods in a similar fashion to diethyl toluamide (deet), which is considered the gold standard compound (2, 3). Picaridin is also better tolerated than deet (1, 4), a fact that has encouraged its use in repellent formulations. We describe ...
